HSI Stop the Bleed (Bleeding Control Basics) Certification Course

Course Overview:

The HSI Stop the Bleed course, also known as Bleeding Control Basics, is designed to teach participants how to recognize life-threatening bleeding and take critical steps to control it. This course aligns with the national Stop the Bleed initiative and integrates HSI’s training standards for emergency bleeding response, making it ideal for public safety teams, community members, and workplace safety programs.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the signs of life-threatening bleeding

  • Understand the ABCs of bleeding control:

    • Alert 911

    • Bleed: Identify the bleeding source

    • Compress: Apply pressure to stop bleeding

  • Apply direct pressure using hands or hemostatic dressings

  • Pack wounds correctly with gauze or cloth

  • Apply and properly use a tourniquet, including:

    • Identifying appropriate placement

    • Securing the tourniquet

    • Monitoring for effectiveness

  • Maintain safety while providing bleeding control

  • Prioritize bleeding control within the larger first aid response

Course Format:

  • Classroom-based format with hands-on training

  • Includes practice with bleeding control kits, gauze, and tourniquets

  • Course duration: Approximately 1.5–2 hours

  • Certification: HSI Bleeding Control Certificate of Completion (valid for 2 years)
